Climate and environmental protection is not just a buzzword in the Hohe Tauern National Park vacation region; we have been consciously investing in sustainable and resource-conserving management and lifestyles for a long time, and the Hohe Tauern National Park, as the largest natural reserve in the country, is the basis for the responsible development of tourism.
The Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region has been awarded the prestigious Austrian Ecolabel for tourism destinations. This means that one of the most impressive natural and cultural landscapes in the Alpine region has received official recognition for its consistent commitment to sustainability, environmental protection and climate action, and is now one of just fifteen certified destinations in Austria.

The Hohe Tauern National Park
The Hohe Tauern National Park, covering a total area of 1,856 km², is the largest protected, contiguous and transnational natural and cultural area in the Alps.
The interaction between the core zone and the surrounding outer zone creates an extraordinary fusion of this unique natural environment with a cultural landscape of outstanding aesthetic beauty.
Sustainable holiday packages
The ‘GreenSpirit’ package on the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail and the ‘GreenSpirit’ package on the Hohe Tauern Bike Trail have launched marketing initiatives to promote car-free holidays.
Accommodations in the Hohe Tauern National Park Holiday Region that hold the Austrian Ecolabel are distinguished by their efforts to promote environmentally friendly practices and establish sustainable standards in their operations.
National Park Worlds and National Park Shop
At the National Park Worlds, the focus is on sustainability. Thanks to the solar panel system, a significant proportion of the building’s energy is generated on site.
The on-site National Park Shop focuses on regional products and sustainable materials. There is also a partnership with the Salzburg-based clothing manufacturer Erdbär, with whom a sustainable clothing range has been created.
Living traditions and regional customs
Events such as the cattle drive down from the alpine pastures, farmers’ autumn festivals and village markets are an integral part of the year and bring locals and visitors together. At the same time, traditional crafts and regional knowledge are still practised today and passed down from generation to generation. In this way, culture, tradition and regional identity are preserved for the future.

Sustainable development in our region requires a solid information base. The RESY Dashboard (Regional Information and Monitoring System) supports us in this effort by providing access to key indicators in the areas of the economy, tourism, the environment, energy, and mobility.
This allows us to visualize developments in the Hohe Tauern National Park vacation region, track trends, and develop joint strategies for the future. In total, the dashboard offers 30 indicators across five thematic areas—ranging from individual municipalities to the entire region.
