The Hohe Tauern National Park is one of the last refuges in Europe for many wild animals. If in the 19th century, the ibex was at risk of becoming extinct, its survival is now thought to be "ensured". The bearded vulture, too, once again circles the skies above the Hohe Tauern. When wildlife watching we can also see golden eagles, marmots, chamois and many more. The national park rangers carry powerful binoculars or telescopes to allow wildlife watching without disturbing the animals.
