“Adventure Mountain & Nature” – Hiking in the national park

A hiking holiday in a national park is a special experience: With 266 three-thousand-metre peaks and 342 glaciers, nature in the 20 townships and 13 valleys of the holiday region Hohe Tauern National Park play an overtopping role. The largest nature reserve in Central Europe beckons to discover its secrets and treasures on sublime hikes, and to experience true adventures. The range of activities spans from family-friendly walks across alpine pastures to natural history excursions, and all the way to high alpine mountain tours in the glacier zone. Hiking is individually or in the company of an experienced national park ranger, who can open visitors' eyes to the fascinating natural landscapes of the earth and their beauty.

Hikers, mountaineers and trekkers will find optimal conditions here: well signposted trails and alpine paths, serviced lodges and mountain huts. Countless routes beckon to explore the alpine world of the Hohe Tauern. There are daily guided full- and half-day tours with the national park rangers. Multi-day trekking tours with luggage transport can also be booked.

Mightily the 3,798 m high Grossglockner - the highest mountain in Austria - protectively spreads its slopes across the Hohe Tauern National Park. Impressively the vultures circle above Rauris' Krumltal Valley, the glacier wind blowing cool from Schmiedingerkees glacial area on Salzburg's highest viewing platform, the Krimml Waterfalls dropping hundreds of metres down with a mighty roar. Around the 120 alpine pastures in the Hohe Tauern National Park, meanwhile, the melodic chime of cowbells sets the tone. On the way there, huckleberries are nibbled hand to mouth and in many a stream fool's gold sparkles in the refreshing waters.
