The edelweiss can be identified by its characteristic white-felted hairiness, which serves as protection against dehydration and excessive UV-radiation. The edelweiss grows mainly on rocky, calcareous meadows, on rocks, in crevices rich in fine soil and alpine meadows between 1,800m, and 3,500 m.

Vegetation, a third of all plant species naturally occurring in Austria grow here. Due to the different climatic conditions, the national park provides diverse habitats for a large number of living organisms.
