Culture and tradition in the Hohe Tauern National Park region
Preserve traditions - experience history
The Hohe Tauern National Park vacation region is not only a place for nature enthusiasts, but also an area where culture and living customs are deeply rooted. Here, centuries-old traditions are combined with a genuine attitude to life - honest, down-to-earth and full of heart.
The year is characterized by festive highlights such as the Almabtrieb, the atmospheric farmers' autumn festivals and the lovingly designed village markets, where music, dance and community take center stage. These customs tell stories of hard work, a deep connection to nature and a strong sense of togetherness that can still be felt today.
Old crafts also have a firm place here: from carving and blacksmithing to the manufacture of regional products, knowledge is passed down from generation to generation.
Living heritage: building culture and customs under protection
At a national level, it is not only impressive natural landscapes, but also contemporary architectural witnesses and living traditions that shape the cultural profile of our region. The Federal Monuments Office documents and protects numerous historically significant buildings with its official list of monuments - a valuable contribution to the preservation of our cultural identity.
In addition to tangible cultural heritage, intangible cultural heritage also plays a central role: it includes customs, festivals, craft techniques, oral knowledge and forms of expression that are passed down from generation to generation. These living traditions make a significant contribution to cultural diversity and social cohesion.
A particularly impressive example of this is the Pinzgauer Tresterertanz of the Salzburg ALPINIA: a centuries-old ritual in which masked dancers parade from farm to farm on January 5th. With their powerful hopping and stamping steps, they bring blessings and community to the farms in the region. This traditional custom was rightly included in the Austrian List of Intangible Cultural Heritage - as an expression of living culture that unites people and creates identity.
