Treading softly…

11/09/2020

Visitors to Hohe Tauern National Park are captivated by its pristine landscapes.

When the first blanket of snow lies across the mountains and valleys, it immediately becomes clear: Winter has arrived. The white virgin snow does not remain completely untouched, however: Tracks of animals, big and small, show that nature is not completely dormant. For fresh-air fiends, this is the perfect time to experience and explore the beauty of Hohe Tauern National Park and the habitat of deer, snow hare et al.

A fascinating program draws nature lovers, active holidaymakers and families alike to this idyllic landscape, whose beauty in the coldest time of year is beyond compare. Led by knowledgeable National Park rangers, explorers set out on winter hikes and snowshoeing expeditions - for example, through Rauris Virgin Forest, the silent Sulzbachtal valleys or the "Cradle Pine Forest" in high-alpine Stubachtal. Anyone wishing to experience the animal world in winter up close should definitely join up with a wildlife feeding. National Park gamekeepers lead participants to a remote feeding station in Habachtal, where roe and red deer - including magnificent stags - are given a healthy helping of hay. After a short, silent hike, you reach an observation hut where you have an outstanding view of these graceful animals. Hohe Tauern National Park also promises ski tourers quite a treat: The tranquility of the mountains invites you to relax in the crisp, clear air and listen to the murmurs of nature. Along the way, you will ascend through alpine terrain and ultimately be rewarded by breathtaking panoramic views as well as a beautiful downhill run through névé or deep snow.

The 8 ski areas of this holiday region are perhaps some of the best-kept secrets in the Alps.
